Overview
Yamhill County lies in the northwestern part of Oregon within the fertile Willamette Valley. It combines agricultural lowlands, rolling hills, and small urban centers. According to the 2010 U.S. census the population was 99,193. The county seat and largest city is McMinnville, which serves as the commercial and cultural hub.
History and origin
The area now called Yamhill County has long been home to Indigenous peoples of the Willamette Valley. Euro-American settlement and local government organization began in the mid-19th century; Yamhill was one of the early Oregon counties established during that period. Its development followed patterns typical of the region: farming, town founding, and later diversification into industry and services.
Geography and environment
Topographically the county includes parts of the Willamette Valley floor and the western hills that rise toward the Coast Range. Rivers and creeks cross the landscape and support irrigation and habitat for native species. Soils and climate are well suited to mixed agriculture, which shapes land use across much of the county.
Economy, agriculture and viticulture
Agriculture has long been central to Yamhill County’s economy. In recent decades the county became widely known for wine grape production—especially Pinot noir—and is part of the broader Willamette Valley wine region. Other important agricultural activities include nurseries, berries, tree crops, and diversified family farming. Small manufacturers, service businesses, education and tourism also contribute.
Communities and attractions
Besides McMinnville, the county contains a number of cities and towns, each with local character:
- McMinnville (county seat)
- Newberg
- Lafayette
- Dayton
- Yamhill
- Willamina
Visitors come for wine tasting, scenic drives, historic downtowns, and museums such as the aviation museum in McMinnville. Parks and trails provide outdoor recreation opportunities year-round.
