Overview

WWF SmackDown! is a professional wrestling video game released for the Sony PlayStation in 2000. Developed by Yuke's and published by THQ, it marked the beginning of the SmackDown! series and the company’s first WWF title for the PlayStation after a change of licensees. The game was released in North America in March 2000, in Europe the following month, and in Japan on August 8, 2000, where it was titled "Exciting Pro Wrestling." The Japanese release was handled by Yuke's Future Media Creators.

Gameplay and features

The game delivers a fast-paced, arcade-influenced wrestling experience built around one-on-one and multi-competitor bouts. Players choose from a roster of WWF performers of the era and can compete in different types of matches. Typical modes and elements include:

  • Single and tag-team matches allowing standard ring combat and partner dynamics.
  • Championship and exhibition-style encounters against CPU or human opponents.
  • A roster that reflects the WWF lineup of the late 1990s and early 2000s with unlockable characters and alternate costumes.

Controls emphasize timed strikes, grapples, signature moves and context-sensitive actions near ropes and turnbuckles. The presentation aimed to capture the look and atmosphere of televised wrestling shows, with entrances and arena details contributing to the spectacle.

Development and release

Yuke's developed the game using their experience in wrestling titles to build realistic animations and a responsive control scheme for the PlayStation hardware. THQ acquired the publishing rights for WWF games on PlayStation, replacing the previous publisher, and positioned SmackDown! as a new annualized series. The game was localized for Japan and marketed under a different title to fit the regional brand.

Reception and legacy

At release, WWF SmackDown! drew attention for its improved visuals, animation fluidity and accessible gameplay. Critics and players noted that while it offered a strong arcade-style alternative to simulation-oriented wrestling games, later entries in the series would expand modes and depth. The title established a continuing franchise and was followed by sequels, most notably WWF SmackDown! 2: Know Your Role. For further information, see the developer and series pages.
