Bernard Landry (1937–2018): Quebec politician, premier and sovereigntist

Early life and background

Landry was born in the parish of Saint-Jacques, Quebec. He trained in law and worked in education and public affairs before entering elected politics. His professional background combined legal training with experience as a teacher and public administrator, which he used throughout his political career.

Political career and offices

A leading member of the Parti Québécois, Landry held several senior cabinet portfolios in governments of the 1990s, including roles that put him in charge of economic and fiscal policy. He became party leader in 2001 and served as premier from 2001 to 2003. After his government was defeated in the 2003 provincial election, he led the opposition until 2005.
