Walter Harris (15 October 1925 – 9 May 2019) was a British writer and broadcaster known for a body of work that includes novels, poetry and radio interviews. Over a literary career that stretched from the late 20th century into the early 21st, Harris published ten books of prose and a number of poetry collections. His first full-length book, Clovis, appeared in 1970 and his final book, Godhead, was published in 2014. A concise overview of his life and career can be found in a short author profile.
Literary work and themes
Harris wrote across genres: fiction, essays and poetry. His prose often blended ironic observation with formal restraint, while his poetry collections were noted for their economical language and occasional lyrical impulse. Several of his poetry volumes and pamphlets are listed in bibliographic compilations and anthologies of late 20th-century British verse; more information on his poetry output is available via a dedicated poetry listing. Critics and readers have described his work as reflective of postwar sensibilities without clinging to any single literary school.
Broadcasting career and notable interviews
Parallel to his writing, Harris worked as a broadcaster for the BBC and contributed features and interviews to radio programming. He gained public attention for a series of interviews conducted around influential cultural events. Notably, he recorded conversations on the opening night of the satirical revue Beyond the Fringe, speaking with Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Alan Bennett and Jonathan Miller, preserving a first-hand account of a landmark moment in British comedy. His other broadcast interviews included conversations with performers and public figures such as Danny Kaye and John Wayne, and with literary figures like W. Somerset Maugham, reflecting a wide-ranging interest in both popular and literary culture.
