Bentonite: properties, formation, and industrial uses

Bentonite is a swelling clay formed by alteration of volcanic ash. Rich in smectite minerals, it absorbs water, exchanges cations, and is widely used in drilling, sealing, foundry work, cat litter, cosmetics, and more.

Bentonite is a fine-grained clay notable for its ability to absorb water and swell. It belongs to the smectite group of clay minerals (chiefly montmorillonite) and is often grouped with other clay materials. Its distinctive behavior — forming a viscous, gel-like mass when wet — makes it useful across many industrial and environmental applications.

Characteristics

Bentonite is characterized by a high cation exchange capacity, exceptional plasticity, and pronounced thixotropy (a reversible change from gel to liquid under shear). Different deposits vary in chemistry: sodium-rich varieties swell the most, while calcium-rich bentonites are less expansive; some deposits contain appreciable potassium or other ions. These chemical differences determine how the material behaves in water, its absorbency, and suitability for particular uses.

Formation and name

Most bentonite forms where volcanic ash has been altered by interaction with water over time — a process driven by weathering and low-temperature diagenesis in lakes or marine basins. The transformation converts glassy volcanic shards into the layered smectite clays that define bentonite. The term itself derives from the name of an early occurrence, and the mineral has been exploited since industrialization as its properties became better understood.

Uses and examples

  • Drilling fluids: sodium-rich bentonite stabilizes boreholes and removes cuttings.
  • Sealing and barrier systems: compacted bentonite is used in liners for ponds, landfills, and wells.
  • Foundry and construction: as a binder in molding sands and as a slurry stabilizer.
  • Absorbents and consumer products: cat litter, pelletizing, and moisture control.
  • Cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food processing where purified grades are used for adsorption and clarifying.
  • Industrial additives: it serves as a rheology modifier and, when treated, as a lubricator or dispersant in formulations.

Specific applications depend on the type of bentonite; for example, sodium-dominated clays are preferred for swelling and sealing tasks, whereas calcium bentonites are often used where less expansion is acceptable or where activation (conversion to the sodium form) is economical. While generally safe in many uses, bentonite can affect engineering designs because of its swelling pressure and changes in permeability. Processors grade and sometimes chemically treat bentonite to meet the technical and regulatory requirements of applications ranging from environmental containment to cosmetics. Its versatility and unique physical chemistry keep bentonite an important industrial mineral worldwide.
