Overview and characteristics

The city has a population of approximately 240,000 residents and covers an area close to 154 km². Vung Tau's shoreline includes a chain of beaches, promenades and rocky headlands. Two notable elevations, locally called Núi Lớn (Big Mountain) and Núi Nhỏ (Small Mountain), provide panoramic views and host landmarks such as a colonial lighthouse and a large statue of Christ.

Economy and infrastructure

Vung Tau is an important center for the country's petroleum industry, with offshore platforms, support bases and a port that services energy companies. At the same time, its sandy beaches, seafood restaurants and coastal resorts make it a popular tourism destination for domestic and regional visitors. Road and ferry links connect the city with Ho Chi Minh City and nearby islands.

History and cultural notes

Originally a fishing and trading settlement, Vung Tau developed under colonial influence into a seaside resort and later expanded as oil exploration grew in the 20th century. The city blends Vietnamese coastal culture with traces of French-era architecture and military heritage from more recent decades.

Attractions and practical information

  • Front Beach (Bãi Trước) and Back Beach (Bãi Sau) for swimming and strolls
  • Big Mountain and Small Mountain viewpoints, lighthouse and statues
  • Seafood markets, promenades and ferry terminals providing island excursions
  • Ports and service bases linked to offshore oil and shipping operations

Vung Tau's mix of industry and leisure makes it distinctive: a working maritime and energy center that also functions as one of southern Vietnam's most accessible seaside escapes.
