Visperterminen (Walser German: Tärbinu) is a mountain municipality in the district of Visp within the canton of Valais. Administratively it is a Swiss local authority (municipality) in Switzerland and is often mentioned for its high-elevation agriculture and traditional Walser culture. The settlement overlooks the Rhône valley and is accessed from the lower town of Visp.

Geography and environment

The village occupies steep slopes above the valley floor and includes terraced vineyards, alpine meadows and scattered hamlets. Its mountain setting gives a cool, continental-alpine climate with strong sunlight and a short growing season at higher elevations. Forested areas and pastureland are common, and trails link the village to neighbouring valleys and high passes.

History and population

Visperterminen grew as part of the Walser migrations that shaped many high Alpine communities. The Walser people brought a Germanic dialect and mountain-farming techniques that remain visible in local speech, architecture and land use. Over time the community adapted traditional agriculture to steep terrain, maintaining terracing and pasture management through communal practices.

Economy, viticulture and uses

Viticulture is a distinctive economic activity: small, steep terraces produce wine from local varieties such as Savagnin (locally known as Heida or Païen). These vineyards are notable for being among the higher cultivated plots in the region. Other livelihoods include dairy and summer alpine grazing, forestry, small-scale tourism and crafts.

Culture and attractions

Visitors come for panoramic views, hiking routes, traditional village architecture and seasonal festivals that celebrate local food and wine. Points of interest include local chapels, stone-built houses and communal terraces.
