Vezio was a separate municipality until a municipal reorganization in the early 21st century. On 13 March 2005 the former municipalities of Breno, Arosio, Fescoggia, Mugena and Vezio joined to form the new municipality of Alto Malcantone. This merger responded to wider Swiss efforts to improve administrative efficiency and local services by combining small neighbouring communes.
