Overview
Värmland County (Värmlands län) is an administrative county in west-central Sweden with its seat in Karlstad. The county largely corresponds to the historical province of Värmland, is traversed by the Klarälven river and borders Norway to the west. It was established as a separate county in 1779.
Geography and climate
The landscape is dominated by extensive coniferous forests, numerous lakes and river valleys, most notably the Klarälven which drains into Lake Vänern. Terrain rises toward inland highlands near the Norwegian border. The climate is generally continental with cold winters and mild summers moderated locally by larger lakes.
Economy and infrastructure
Forestry and wood processing have long been important, alongside paper, pulp and light manufacturing. Services, public sector employment and a growing knowledge sector centred on institutions such as Karlstad University contribute to the regional economy. Transportation links include road and rail connections to other parts of Sweden and across the border to Norway; regional planning and public services are overseen by the county administrative board and a regional council (county information).
Culture and history
Värmland has a strong cultural legacy in literature, music and folk traditions. The county is associated with writers such as Selma Lagerlöf and poets like Gustaf Fröding, and with long-standing rural customs and popular music traditions. Local history reflects patterns of settlement, resource use and transport along rivers and lakes.
Settlements and recreation
The county seat, Karlstad, is the largest urban centre. Other notable towns and municipalities include Karlstad and regional centres such as Arvika, Kristinehamn, Filipstad, Hagfors, Sunne and Torsby. The region is popular for outdoor activities—hiking, canoeing, fishing and winter sports—and attracts visitors interested in nature and cultural tourism (regional tourism).
