Overview
Valery Grigorievich Asapov (Валерий Григорьевич Асапов) was a senior officer of the Russian Armed Forces, born on 1 January 1966. He reached the rank of lieutenant general in the Russian military establishment and was described by multiple official accounts as one of the most senior Russian military advisers deployed in Syria during the Syrian Civil War. His service reflected a career in command and staff positions within Russia's ground forces, culminating in high-level advisory duties abroad.

Asapov served in units of the Russian army and at times commanded an army motorised rifle brigade. In recognition of his service, he was awarded the 4th Class of the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" by President Vladimir Putin on 23 February 2013, an honour given to military and civilian personnel for notable contributions to the state and society. Official military profiles and notices refer to his role in senior command and planning functions prior to his deployment to Syria.
Role in Syria
During the Russian intervention in Syria, Asapov was identified as a senior adviser embedded with Syrian government forces and coordinating operations alongside Russian units. Russian statements and media coverage characterised him as a key figure in the effort to stabilise government-held areas and to organise combined-arms operations against opposing groups in the theatre.
Death and operational context
On 23 September 2017, the Russian Defence Ministry announced that Asapov was killed near the city of Deir ez-Zor in eastern Syria. The ministry reported that mortar fire from militants aligned with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) had caused his death. Deir ez-Zor was a strategically important and fiercely contested area during the conflict, with several actors vying for control of its population centres, oil-producing regions and river crossings along the Euphrates.

The death of a high-ranking officer serving in an advisory capacity drew attention to the level of Russian involvement and the risks faced by personnel operating close to front-line positions.
