Umbriel is a dark, heavily cratered moon of Uranus discovered in 1851. It is a mid-sized icy satellite with an old surface, low reflectivity, and limited geological activity; Voyager 2 provided most close-up data.

Umbriel is composed primarily of water ice mixed with a significant fraction of darker, carbon-rich material and silicate rock. Its diameter is roughly in the range of 1,100–1,200 kilometers, making it similar in size to some of Uranus's other large moons. The surface reflects comparatively little sunlight, which gives Umbriel a darker appearance than many neighboring satellites.
Surface and geology
The surface of Umbriel is ancient and heavily cratered, indicating little recent geological resurfacing. Voyager 2 flyby images revealed numerous impact craters and a notable bright-ringed crater called Wunda, which contrasts with the generally dark terrain. There is little evidence for widespread tectonic or cryovolcanic activity; most features appear to be the product of impacts and long-term space weathering.
History and exploration
Umbriel was discovered by William Lassell on the same night he found the moon Ariel. Since its discovery in the 19th century, knowledge of Umbriel advanced slowly until close-up observations were made by the Voyager 2 spacecraft in 1986. Voyager 2 remains the only mission to have imaged Umbriel at close range, providing most of the high-resolution data used today.
