Tschierv: former alpine municipality in Graubünden, Switzerland

Geography and language

The village occupies an alpine landscape of meadows, pastures and steep valley sides. Its location in Val Müstair gives it access to summer grazing and winter mountain routes, and the surrounding valleys are used for outdoor recreation such as hiking and snow activities. Culturally the area preserves elements of the Romansh language alongside German, and local life reflects long-standing mountain traditions.

History and municipal merger

Administratively Tschierv functioned as an independent municipality for many years before a regional reorganisation. On 1 January 2009 Tschierv joined several neighbouring communes to create a single municipal entity. The partners in that reorganisation included:

The consolidation resulted in the new municipality of Val Müstair, which brought local administration, services and planning under one organisation while retaining the names and identities of the individual villages.

Economy and cultural life

Tschierv’s economy has traditionally relied on mountain agriculture, seasonal pasture use and small-scale forestry. Tourism linked to the valley’s natural scenery and cultural sites supplements local incomes; visitors are drawn to the rural landscape and nearby heritage locations. The whole Val Müstair area is also noted for its preservation of traditional architecture and regional customs.

Today Tschierv is a village within the municipality of Val Müstair and continues to serve as a local centre for surrounding alpine farms and hamlets.
