Tony Allen (1940–2020) — Nigerian drummer and co-founder of Afrobeat

Role with Africa '70 and Afrobeat

Allen served as drummer and musical director for Fela Kuti's band Africa '70 from 1968 to 1979. In that role he helped shape the signature grooves and long-form arrangements that characterize Afrobeat: interlocking, polyrhythmic drum patterns that create space for horns, keys and call-and-response vocals. Music historians and musicians often credit Allen as a co-founder of the genre because of the centrality of his drumming to the Afrobeat sound.

After leaving Africa '70, Allen continued to record and perform, bringing Afrobeat's rhythmic ideas into new contexts. He relocated to and spent much of his later life living and working in Paris, where he collaborated with musicians across jazz, electronic and popular music scenes and introduced Afrobeat to broader international audiences.

Technique and musical characteristics

Tony Allen died in Paris on 30 April 2020 from an aortic aneurysm, aged 79.
