Tomb Raider II is an action-adventure video game in the Tomb Raider franchise and serves as the direct sequel to the original Tomb Raider. The title was developed by Core Design and released by Eidos Interactive. It first appeared on the PlayStation and on Windows 95 in November 1997, was later ported to Macintosh in 1998, and became available on the PlayStation Network in 2009.
Overview
The game continues the adventures of the series' protagonist, expanding the scope and complexity of levels compared with its predecessor. It retains the third-person perspective and a mix of platforming, exploration and puzzle-solving, while introducing additional equipment and level designs intended to broaden the player's options.
Gameplay
Players control the central character through a sequence of environments that combine exploration with combat and puzzle elements. Progress depends on navigating hazards, finding keys or items, and overcoming environmental challenges. Compared with the first game, this installment offers larger areas and new tools that change how certain obstacles can be approached.
Story
The narrative follows the protagonist as she pursues a powerful artifact, travelling to multiple international locations. Encounters with rival treasure hunters and dangerous guardians present both combat and puzzle-driven obstacles that advance the plot.
Development and release
Built by Core Design and published by Eidos Interactive, the title used an enhanced version of the technology from the series' debut. The simultaneous November 1997 launch for PlayStation and Windows 95 was followed by a Macintosh edition in 1998. Years later the game was reissued on the PlayStation Network, making it accessible to a newer audience.
Legacy
The sequel helped consolidate the series' format of combining platforming, exploration and light combat. It remains a frequently cited early example of a large-scale 3D action-adventure title and has been made available across multiple platforms since its initial release.
