Overview
The Tocantins River is a principal river system in central and northern Brazil. Rising near the Serra dos Pireneus in the state of Goiás, it flows generally northward through varied landscapes before reaching the lowlands of northern Brazil and discharging into the coastal estuary region that connects to the Atlantic. The Tocantins and its main western tributary, the Araguaia, together drain a large portion of Brazil's interior and form one of the country's most important riverine systems.

The river begins in upland central Brazil and collects runoff from a broad basin as it travels north. Its best known tributary, the Araguaia River, joins from the west; the Araguaia has headwaters far to the south on the slopes of the Serra dos Caiapós and creates extensive river islands and seasonally flooded plains en route. Other tributaries and seasonal streams add to the Tocantins' flow as it passes through the states of Goiás and Tocantins and into Pará.
Basin, ecology and floodplain
The Tocantins–Araguaia system supports a variety of habitats, including upland cerrado savanna, gallery forest, seasonally flooded grasslands and tropical lowland waterways. These habitats sustain diverse fish populations, aquatic mammals and waterbirds; seasonal floods are important for nutrient cycling and fish migrations. Hydrological connections with coastal estuaries create complex brackish environments near the mouth that are also ecologically significant.
Human use, navigation and infrastructure
The river has long been used for local navigation, fishing and irrigation. In the later 20th century large hydroelectric projects transformed parts of the Tocantins: notable among them is the Tucuruí complex on the lower river, a major power source completed in the 1980s. Dams improved energy supply and inland navigation in some stretches but also altered flood regimes, sediment transport and fish migration, with ecological and social consequences for riverside communities.
History, names and regional importance
Indigenous peoples lived along the Tocantins and its tributaries long before European contact; explorers mapped the river during colonial expansion. The modern state of Tocantins, created in 1988, takes its name from the river. Today the Tocantins remains important for regional transport, hydroelectric generation, freshwater fisheries and as a focus of conservation and development debates in Brazil.
