Tin(II) fluoride (stannous fluoride)
Tin(II) fluoride (SnF2), commonly called stannous fluoride, is a tin salt used mainly in dental products to prevent cavities and has applications in chemistry and industry.

Tin(II) fluoride, commonly called stannous fluoride, is an inorganic compound with the formula SnF2. It is composed of tin in the +2 oxidation state and fluoride anions. In its pure form it is a crystalline solid that reacts with moisture and air; as a source of fluoride and stannous (Sn2+) ions it has distinctive chemical behavior and practical uses.

Chemically, SnF2 supplies both tin and fluoride ions; the tin is present as Sn(II). The material can hydrolyze and is susceptible to oxidation to tin(IV) species, which complicates storage and formulation. It is moderately soluble in water and tends to form coordination complexes and basic salts under different conditions.
Uses and applications
Stannous fluoride is best known for dental use: when formulated appropriately in toothpastes and rinses it helps reduce dental decay by promoting remineralization of enamel and inhibiting bacteria. Historically it has been used in a variety of oral-care products and remains an option alongside other fluoride sources. In chemistry and industry, SnF2 can serve as a source of stannous ions for certain reduction reactions and as a specialized reagent where both tin and fluoride are required.

- Can cause surface staining or taste changes in older formulations unless stabilized.

As with all fluoride compounds, ingestion of large amounts can be hazardous; products containing stannous fluoride carry usage instructions and concentration limits. Compared with sodium fluoride or sodium monofluorophosphate, stannous fluoride supplies tin as well as fluoride, which can give different therapeutic effects and side effects.
