Overview: Tillman County is a rural county in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The county seat is Frederick. Historically the county has been dominated by agriculture and small-town community life; farms, ranches and family-operated businesses shape daily life and local identity. As noted in older census reports, the county population was 9,287 at the 2000 census.

Geography and landscape

The county lies within the southern Great Plains. Its landscape is a mix of cultivated cropland, pasture, and patches of native prairie and woodland along streams. Local water resources include small reservoirs and irrigation systems that support crop production. The climate is typical of the region, with hot summers and cool winters that influence planting and harvest seasons.

History

Tillman County developed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as settlement and ranching expanded in southwestern Oklahoma. Towns often formed around railroad stops and trading centers. Over time, agricultural practices and transportation improvements shaped community patterns; historic buildings and local museums preserve aspects of that past.

Economy and land use

Agriculture is the primary economic base: grain and forage crops, cattle ranching and other livestock are common. Periodic energy activity, including oil and gas exploration, has provided additional jobs and revenue at times. Local retail, manufacturing and public-sector services are concentrated in Frederick and a few small towns.

Communities and services

  • Frederick (county seat and service center)
  • Several small towns and unincorporated communities provide schools, churches and volunteer organizations

County government administers roads and bridges, public safety, courts and records. Local school districts, clinics and emergency services are important supports for rural residents.

Transportation and recreation

The county is served by state highways, local roads and some rail access that link farms and towns to regional markets. Outdoor recreation includes hunting, fishing at local reservoirs and seasonal community events, fairs and rodeos that remain central to local culture.
