Tiefencastel — former municipal centre in the Albula region of Graubünden, Switzerland
Tiefencastel (Romansh: Casti) is a village in Graubünden, Switzerland, formerly the capital of Albula district. It merged with neighbouring communes in 2015 to form the municipality of Albula/Alvra.
Overview
Tiefencastel (Romansh: Casti) is a village in eastern Switzerland that until 2015 served as an independent municipality and the administrative centre of the Albula district in the canton of Graubünden (canton). The settlement occupies a strategic valley location where routes to the Albula and Julier passes meet; its permanent population was small (around 250 residents in 2013).

Situated in the Albula valley, Tiefencastel lies at a junction used historically for transit across the central Alps. Modern road links connect the village with major alpine passes and neighbouring valleys, while rail services on the Rhaetian Railway provide regular connections to regional centres. The Albula railway line, which serves the region, is famed for its engineering and is part of a route recognised for its cultural and technical significance.
History and name
The name Tiefencastel (literally "deep castle" in German) and the Romansh form Casti reflect medieval origins and the village's setting in a narrow valley corridor. Over centuries the settlement developed primarily as a local administrative and transport hub rather than as an industrial centre, and historic buildings and the layout of the village still show this alpine rural character.
Municipal merger
As part of regional reforms to streamline administration and public services, Tiefencastel ceased to be an independent municipality on 1 January 2015. It joined with neighbouring communes to form the new municipality of Albula/Alvra. The former member communes included:
- Alvaschein
- Mon
- Stierva
- Tiefencastel
- Alvaneu
- Brienz/Brinzauls
- Surava
Following the merger, Tiefencastel functions as a village and local centre within the larger municipal structure of Albula/Alvra while retaining its local identity and services.
Economy, culture and tourism
The local economy is shaped by small-scale commerce, hospitality and services linked to alpine tourism and transit. Tiefencastel is a gateway for hikers, cyclists and motorists exploring nearby passes and mountain landscapes. The bilingual character of the region—German and Romansh—remains visible in place names, school provision and cultural life, reflecting the broader linguistic diversity of the canton.
Significance
Although modest in size, Tiefencastel's historic role as a crossroads and its former status as district capital underlined its regional importance. Today it is valued for accessibility to mountain routes, local services for residents and visitors, and as a representative settlement of the Albula valley within the canton of Graubünden.
