Thomas Arquis Howard (July 14, 1983 – November 18, 2013) was an American professional football player who played at the linebacker position in the National Football League. He was selected in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders and went on to play in the league for several seasons with multiple clubs.

Early life and college

Born and raised in Lubbock, Texas, Howard attended high school in his hometown before playing college football at the University of Texas at El Paso. At UTEP he developed as a prospect at linebacker, drawing attention from NFL scouts for his speed, tackling ability and versatility in both run defense and pass coverage.

Professional career

Howard began his professional career with the Oakland Raiders after being drafted in 2006. He spent several seasons in Oakland, where he earned playing time on defense and special teams. Later in his career he signed with the Cincinnati Bengals (2011–2012) and the Atlanta Falcons (2013), contributing as a rotational linebacker and special teams player.

Playing style and role

Howard was generally regarded as a physical, mobile linebacker who could be used in a variety of front-seven alignments. He was valued for his pursuit and ability to make plays across the field; like many NFL linebackers he combined run-stopping duties with pass coverage responsibilities depending on the defensive scheme.

Death and legacy

On November 18, 2013, Howard died in a high-speed automobile crash in Oakland, California. He was 30 years old. The accident also claimed another life and prompted public statements from former teammates and clubs remembering his energy and presence on and off the field.
