Geography and viticulture

The commune occupies slopes and terraces that provide good drainage and sun exposure for vines. Soils are often calcareous and stony, favouring grape varieties used locally. Beaumes-de-Venise gives its name to a notable sweet fortified wine, Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise (an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée), and also contributes grapes to reds and rosés in the Côtes du Rhône range.

History and built environment

The village preserves a compact historic core with narrow streets, stone houses and remnants of defensive works on the hilltops. Its origins stretch back through the medieval period; over time agriculture and winemaking shaped the settlement pattern and local architecture.

Viticulture remains the principal economic activity, complemented by tourism. Visitors come for wine-tasting, cellar visits, local markets and outdoor pursuits such as walking and climbing in the Dentelles de Montmirail.
