Adenomus is a small genus of amphibians in the family Bufonidae, commonly referred to as true toads. Members of this genus are endemic to the island of Sri Lanka and occur in limited, often fragmented forest habitats. The genus is notable for its restricted range and for conservation attention following long periods without confirmed sightings of some species.

Characteristics

Species placed in Adenomus are generally small-bodied toads with the robust, warty appearance typical of bufonids. Their life histories are terrestrial but tied to freshwater for breeding; like many true toads they lay eggs that develop into aquatic tadpoles. Field reports emphasize cryptic coloration and secretive habits, which can make populations hard to detect.

Distribution and species

The genus contains three recognized species confined to Sri Lankan forests. One of these, Adenomus kandianus, attracted wide attention when it was rediscovered in October 2009 near the Kandy area after 133 years without confirmed records. That rediscovery highlighted both the resilience of some amphibian populations and the challenges of surveying in rugged, forested terrain.

Conservation and threats

Adenomus species face the same pressures affecting many island endemics: habitat loss from deforestation and land conversion, fragmentation of remaining forest, and the potential impacts of emerging diseases and climate change. Conservation assessments typically emphasize habitat protection, targeted field surveys to better document distribution and population size, and research into reproductive ecology.

Research and importance

Because Adenomus are restricted to Sri Lanka and include species with very small known ranges, they are important for studies of island biogeography, evolution and conservation prioritization. Sources of authoritative taxonomic and conservation information can be consulted through specialized amphibian databases and regional accounts; see a genus overview at Adenomus overview and a general reference on true toads at Bufonidae (true toads).
