Overview
Tarragonès is a comarca (county) on the Mediterranean shore of northeastern Spain, in the autonomous community of Catalonia and the province of Tarragona in Spain. Its administrative centre and largest city is Tarragona, which concentrates a majority of the comarca's population. The area is part of the larger Camp de Tarragona region and occupies a stretch of the Costa Daurada (the "Golden Coast").
Geography and municipalities
The territory includes a coastal plain with sandy beaches and low hills inland. Along the shore there are ports, marinas and resort towns; further inland the landscape transitions to agricultural fields, vineyards and small industrial zones. Municipalities in the comarca range from the historic city of Tarragona to smaller coastal and interior towns that serve residential, tourist and industrial functions.
History and heritage
Tarragona grew from the ancient Roman city of Tarraco, once an important provincial capital; its archaeological remains form a major part of the area's identity and attract international visitors. The modern comarca was defined in the twentieth-century comarcal reorganizations that grouped local municipalities for administrative and planning purposes.
Economy and infrastructure
The economy of Tarragonès is diverse: the port of Tarragona supports shipping, logistics and a sizeable petrochemical and industrial complex on the coast, while tourism brings visitors to beaches, marinas and theme-park attractions near the shore. Agriculture, including vineyards and other Mediterranean crops, remains present in the inland areas. Major transport links—coastal highways, regional rail and the port—connect the comarca with the rest of Catalonia and Spain.
Culture, tourism and notable features
Tarragona's Roman monuments—an amphitheatre, forum remains and stretches of ancient walls—are among the most prominent cultural assets. The coastline supports family tourism, water sports and excursions, and the comarca hosts festivals, markets and seasonal events that reflect both local traditions and its maritime character.
Distinctions and contemporary issues
Tarragonès is notable for the juxtaposition of heavy industry and archaeological conservation, as well as for balancing tourism development with local life. Its role within the Camp de Tarragona economic area makes it an important node for transport, commerce and cultural tourism along Catalonia's southern Mediterranean coast.
