History

Sullivan County was created in 1827 from the northern portion of Cheshire County and named in honor of General John Sullivan (1740–1795), a Revolutionary War officer and a later governor of New Hampshire. The county's settlements grew in the 18th and 19th centuries around mills on rivers, small farms and transportation routes linking New England towns.

The local economy has historically combined agriculture, small-scale manufacturing and service industries. Tourism tied to lakes, historic sites and outdoor recreation contributes to seasonal economic activity.
