Stanley Milgram (August 15, 1933 – December 20, 1984) was an American social psychologist best known for experimental work on obedience to authority and for early investigations into social networks. Milgram's most famous research, commonly referred to as the obedience experiments, used a laboratory setup in which participants were instructed to administer increasingly intense electric shocks to a person they believed to be another volunteer. In reality the recipient was a confederate and no real shocks were given. The experiments measured how many participants would follow authoritative commands to continue administering shocks despite apparent distress from the recipient. Milgram summarized this work in his book Obedience to Authority and discussed the results in relation to events such as the Holocaust.

- The obedience studies showed that a substantial portion of ordinary people would carry out actions conflicting with personal conscience when urged by an authority figure in a formal setting.

Small-world research and six degrees
In 1967 Milgram conducted a different line of research exploring how many intermediary acquaintances separate two random people. His small-world experiments led to the popular notion of "six degrees of separation." Later studies using digital communication data have produced different average path lengths and have both confirmed and challenged aspects of Milgram's original findings.
