Spartak Timofeyevich Belyaev (27 October 1923 – 5 January 2017) was a prominent Soviet and Russian theoretical physicist. Born in Moscow, he became known for pioneering work on the quantum many-body problem and the microscopic theory of atomic nuclei. His research combined methods of quantum field theory and statistical physics to address collective phenomena in finite fermion systems.

Research and contributions

Belyaev made important contributions to several interrelated areas of theoretical physics, including nuclear structure, pairing correlations (nuclear superfluidity), and collective excitations in finite Fermi systems. His work helped extend ideas from Landau’s Fermi-liquid theory to nuclei and other finite systems, clarifying how individual particle motion couples to collective modes. These advances had implications for understanding nuclear spectra, transition probabilities, and response functions.

Career and roles

Over a long career he held senior scientific and administrative posts in Soviet and Russian institutions. He was associated with the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics in Novosibirsk, where he served in leadership capacities and helped develop theoretical programs. He was also an active member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and participated in national research administration and mentoring of younger physicists.

Awards and recognition

Belyaev’s achievements were recognized by multiple honors. He received international awards such as the Feenberg Medal (2004) for contributions to quantum many-body theory, and in 2011 the Russian Academy of Sciences awarded him the prestigious Lomonosov Gold Medal jointly with Gerard 't Hooft. National distinctions and memberships reflected his standing in the physics community.

Legacy and significance

His work continues to influence theoretical approaches to nuclear structure and other finite quantum systems, including ultracold atomic gases and mesoscopic physics. Belyaev is remembered both for technical advances in formal theory and for training generations of researchers in Russia. He died in Moscow on 5 January 2017.
