Southwestern Moundbuilders (Southwestern College athletics)

Scope of the program

The Moundbuilders program fields men's and women's teams across a range of traditional collegiate sports. As is typical for NAIA institutions, the program emphasizes both athletic development and academic success for student-athletes. Teams frequently travel regionally to compete within the KCAC and in other NAIA-sanctioned events.

History and identity

The "Moundbuilders" nickname reflects a regional connection to the earthwork-building cultures that once inhabited parts of North America, a reference adopted by the college to signify endurance and local heritage. Over time the nickname has become a central part of the school's athletic identity and traditions. The athletic program has evolved along with changes in college athletics, balancing competitive goals with student welfare and academic standards.

Conference and competition

The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference provides regular-season schedules, conference championships, and pathways to NAIA national tournaments. Competition within the KCAC is often intense, producing local rivalries and memorable postseason matchups. Success is measured by conference standings, postseason qualifications, and the development of student-athletes on and off the field.
