The company operates a mixed network of suburban and longer-distance services. Trains serve south‑east London and commuter corridors into several central London termini, and extend across most of Kent and into parts of East Sussex. Background and transition

The business currently trading as Southeastern replaced the previous private franchisee on 17 October 2021. That change followed financial and contractual concerns relating to the earlier operator. Reports at the time indicated that the previous franchisee had retained around £25 million that the Department for Transport expected to be returned, prompting the Department to transfer responsibility to an operator of last resort to ensure continuity of services.
