Overview

Sottens was a small rural municipality in the Gros‑de‑Vaud district of the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. The locality is often identified by its name as a village and local community more than by any large urban infrastructure. Its identity has been shaped by agriculture, woodland on the Jorat plateau and a number of local landmarks.

Administrative history

On 1 July 2011 Sottens ceased to exist as an independent municipality when it joined with neighboring communes to create a new administrative entity. The merger brought together Villars‑Tiercelin, Montaubion‑Chardonney, Sottens, Villars‑Mendraz and Peney‑le‑Jorat to form the municipality of Jorat‑Menthue. Such consolidations are common in Switzerland as small communes combine resources for local services, planning and administration.

Radio transmitter

The locality is widely known beyond its immediate region because of a major radio transmitter constructed in 1931 to serve French‑language broadcasting in Switzerland. The transmitter and its mast have been a prominent landmark in the area and a symbol of early 20th‑century broadcast technology. For decades it played an important role in national radio coverage, helping carry public radio programmes across francophone parts of the country.

Geography, economy and transport

Sottens sits on the gentle heights of the Jorat plateau, a landscape of mixed farmland and forest typical of central Vaud. The local economy historically relied on agriculture, small‑scale forestry and services that support rural communities. Today the village is linked by regional roads and public transport services to nearby towns and the larger urban centres of the canton, while retaining a largely village character.

Culture and points of interest

Visitors and residents value Sottens for its tranquil rural environment, traditional Swiss village architecture and the radio mast which attracts interest from those curious about broadcasting history. Local associations occasionally organise events and guided visits that highlight the technical and cultural heritage connected to the transmitter and the surrounding countryside.

Present status and notable facts

Although Sottens is no longer an autonomous municipality, it remains a distinct village and place name within the new municipal structure of Jorat‑Menthue. The radio transmitter remains the locality's most notable modern landmark and is frequently cited in discussions of Switzerland's broadcasting history.
