The county features tidal marshes, reclaimed farm fields, and several important waterfronts used historically and today for shipping and industry.

History and name

Created in 1850 as one of California's original counties, Solano was named for the Patwin leader known as Chief Solano (Sem-Yeto). Indigenous peoples, early Spanish and Mexican land grants, and 19th-century American settlement shaped its development. Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo and other military and maritime facilities played major roles in the county's past economy.

Travis Air Force Base, located near Fairfield, is a prominent employer. Vineyards, row crops and feedlots occupy much of the rural landscape, while industry and distribution centers cluster along interstate and rail corridors.
