History and development

The formation now known as the Social Democrats dates to 1993, when it operated as the United List of Social Democrats (Slovene: Združena lista socialnih demokratov, ZLSD). In 2005 the party adopted the shorter name Social Democrats to reflect a renewed identity and alignment with mainstream European social democracy. During the 1990s and 2000s it evolved from the broader post-communist and social-democratic currents that shaped many parties across Central and Eastern Europe.

Role in government and politics

SD has participated in both opposition and governing coalitions. For example, it was a coalition partner in the government formed by Marjan Šarec on 13 September 2018, illustrating the party’s ability to play a moderating, coalition-building role. The party competes with other Slovenian left and centre-left formations, as well as with centre-right parties, over policy on welfare, economic reform, and European integration.
