Sobekneferu — last ruler of Egypt's Twelfth Dynasty
Sobekneferu was a Middle Kingdom pharaoh who ruled at the close of Egypt's Twelfth Dynasty. One of the earliest women to adopt full royal titulary, her brief reign and few monuments preceded the Thirteenth Dynasty.
Sobekneferu, also written Neferusobek, was a pharaoh of ancient Egypt who ruled at the end of the Twelfth Dynasty in the early second millennium BCE. Her throne name and personal name invoke the crocodile god Sobek; her name is commonly rendered as "the beauty of Sobek." She is important in Egyptian history as one of the earliest women to assume full pharaonic titulary and to rule in her own right.

Chronological reconstructions place her reign in the early 1800s BCE; conventional estimates often give a short rule of a few years around 1806–1802 BCE, but exact dates remain uncertain. Her precise family ties are debated: she is usually connected to the late Twelfth Dynasty royal house and succeeded Amenemhat IV, but surviving records do not record a secure male heir. Contemporary inscriptions show that she adopted the regalia and titles of a king, a practice attested in a few other exceptional cases of female rulership in Egyptian history.
Archaeology and monuments
Material evidence for Sobekneferu is limited. Archaeologists have attributed a small number of statue fragments, inscribed blocks and building remains to her name. An unfinished pyramid complex at Mazghuna has been suggested by some scholars as possibly linked to her, though that attribution is not universally accepted. The relative scarcity of monuments compared with earlier Twelfth Dynasty rulers complicates efforts to reconstruct the full scope of her policies or building activity.
Significance
Her reign marks a dynastic transition: after her death the Twelfth Dynasty ended and the Thirteenth Dynasty began, a period characterised by more numerous but shorter-lived kings. Sobekneferu's rule sheds light on questions of royal legitimacy, gender and religious patronage in the Middle Kingdom. Because her name connects the crown with a regional deity, she also illustrates how local cults could be woven into royal identity.
