Overview

Simi Valley is a suburban city in the state of California, in the United States. It serves as the county seat of Ventura County. The city lies in a broad valley framed by the Simi Hills and the Santa Susana Mountains. Historically agricultural, it became a largely residential community during the 20th century and functions today as both a local employment center and a bedroom community for the greater Los Angeles region.

Geography and climate

Simi Valley occupies a sheltered basin with rolling hills and several canyons. The climate is Mediterranean: warm, dry summers and mild, wetter winters. Open-space areas and regional trails offer hiking, equestrian use, and viewpoints over the valley toward the Pacific and surrounding peaks.

History and development

The area was originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples and later came under Spanish and Mexican ranching systems during the mission era. Known for Rancho Simi in the 19th century, the valley transitioned from ranchland and orchards to suburban subdivisions after World War II as road and rail links improved.
