In machines a shaft is a rotating member that transmits power and torque between components. Key features include journals or bearing seats, keyways or splines for attaching gears and pulleys, couplings for joining segments, and seals where the shaft passes through housings. Common materials are steels and, in specialized applications, stainless steel, aluminum alloys or composite materials. Design considerations include torsional stiffness and strength, combined bending and torsion loads, critical speed and vibration, fatigue life, alignment and lubrication. Bearing selection, surface finish and proper mounting are central to reliable operation.

Architectural and service shafts

In buildings a shaft is a vertical enclosed space used to accommodate elevators, stairwells, mechanical ducts, plumbing risers or utility services. Elevator shafts must meet strict safety and fire-separation standards, provide adequate clearances for hoisting equipment and permit inspection and maintenance. Service shafts and light wells are planned early in design to coordinate routing of building systems and to assist ventilation, daylighting and smoke control.

Mining shafts

In mining, a shaft is a deep vertical or inclined excavation sunk from the surface to access underground ore bodies or workings. Shafts provide routes for personnel, material hoisting, ventilation, pumping and emergency egress. Sinking a shaft requires ground support, dewatering and careful planning for hoisting systems; ventilation shafts are sized and located to control air flow and maintain a safe atmosphere underground.

Sports, tools and projectiles

In sporting equipment the shaft is the long, slender part of an implement. Examples include an arrow or javelin shaft, where straightness, stiffness (spine) and weight affect flight; the shaft of a golf club, where material and flex influence swing dynamics; and the shaft of a cue or hiking pole. Materials range from traditional wood to modern carbon fiber and metals, chosen for strength-to-weight ratio and predictable behaviour.

Anatomical and light shafts

In anatomy the term describes elongated parts such as the hair shaft—the visible filament of a hair—or the shaft (diaphysis) of a long bone that supports axial loads between the ends. In architecture and landscape, a light shaft or light well channels daylight deep into interiors or subterranean spaces, improving illumination and perceived space.

Cultural and colloquial uses

The word appears in popular culture and everyday language: as a title and character in detective fiction and film traditions of the late 20th century, and as slang meaning to treat someone unfairly. These uses are metaphorical extensions of the core idea of a long, penetrating element.

Because the term spans many disciplines, precise communication relies on context. Safety, materials and performance priorities differ greatly between a rotating machine shaft, an occupied elevator shaft and a mine shaft; therefore professionals use discipline-specific standards and practices when designing, maintaining or regulating shafts.
