Geography and settlements

Much of the borough lies within rolling agricultural land and areas of protected landscape to the north of the Greensand and the North Downs. Principal settlements include:

History and government

The modern borough was established on 1 April 1974 as part of a nationwide reorganisation of local government. It is governed by a borough council responsible for local planning, housing, waste collection and many community services. The council’s headquarters and civic offices are based in the town often referred to as the district headquarters.
