Geography and settlements

Much of the borough lies within rolling agricultural land and areas of protected landscape to the north of the Greensand and the North Downs. Principal settlements include:

  • Sevenoaks (administrative centre)
  • Swanley
  • Edenbridge
  • Westerham
  • Smaller villages and hamlets spread across rural parishes

History and government

The modern borough was established on 1 April 1974 as part of a nationwide reorganisation of local government. It is governed by a borough council responsible for local planning, housing, waste collection and many community services. The council’s headquarters and civic offices are based in the town often referred to as the district headquarters.

Economy, transport and services

The local economy mixes small businesses, retail and services with agriculture in rural areas. Proximity to London makes parts of the district popular with commuters; rail links and fast road connections support daily travel to the capital and to neighbouring centres. Local services include schools (notably well-known independent and state schools), health facilities and a variety of leisure and community organisations.

Landmarks, parks and culture

The borough is notable for historic houses set in large parks and for countryside attractions. Well-known properties and cultural sites draw visitors and contribute to local identity. The combination of green space, heritage assets and market towns gives the district a mix of rural character and suburban living.

For further local information and services consult the borough’s official pages or local tourist resources for details on conservation areas, events and planning policies.
