Selenium monochloride, commonly written Se2Cl2 and sometimes called diselenium dichloride or selenium(I) chloride, is a covalent inorganic halide of selenium. It typically appears as an orange to reddish liquid and is chemically related to disulfur dichloride (S2Cl2). In this compound each selenium atom formally has a +1 average oxidation state and the molecule contains an Se–Se single bond with one chlorine atom attached to each selenium.

Structure and bonding

Se2Cl2 consists of discrete molecules with an Se–Se link and terminal Se–Cl bonds. Its bonding and geometry are analogous to those of S2Cl2: a nonplanar, distorted arrangement around the Se–Se axis that affects its reactivity. Electronic structure is dominated by covalent interactions; the compound is not ionic despite the presence of chlorine atoms. Preparation and typical reactions

Se2Cl2 is most often prepared by controlled chlorination of elemental selenium or by reduction of higher selenium chlorides. The reaction must be managed to avoid over-chlorination to SeCl4 or decomposition. It hydrolyzes on contact with water to give hydrochloric acid and selenium-containing residues and reacts with nucleophiles at selenium to form organoselenium derivatives.
