Séamus Hegarty (1940–2019)

Early life and priesthood

Hegarty was a native of Kilcar in County Donegal. He trained for the priesthood and served in parish ministry and diocesan roles before his appointment as a bishop. As with many clergy of his generation, his early ministry combined pastoral care, sacramental work and involvement in local church administration.

Episcopal appointments and responsibilities

He was appointed Bishop of Raphoe in 1982 and served there until 1994, when he was translated to the Diocese of Derry. His years as a diocesan bishop encompassed oversight of clergy, confirmation and other sacramental duties, diocesan governance, support for Catholic schools and engagement with lay organizations. The broad duties of a bishop also include pastoral leadership, liturgical direction and representing the local church in public affairs.

During his episcopate Hegarty was involved in routine diocesan matters and the longer-term pastoral challenges facing the church in Ireland. His work took place against a backdrop of social change and evolving expectations of religious institutions.

Illness, resignation and death

In November 2011 Hegarty was diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disease that affected his ability to carry out episcopal duties. The Holy See announced on 23 November 2011 that his resignation had been accepted. After stepping down he lived in retirement in County Donegal and died on 20 September 2019 in Letterkenny, County Donegal, at the age of 79.
