Overview
Letterkenny (Irish: Leitir Ceanainn) is a principal town in County Donegal, in the northwest of Ireland. It lies on the River Swilly and serves as a commercial, administrative and service hub for much of the county and surrounding rural areas. The town's population is in the tens of thousands, making it the largest settlement in Donegal.
Geography and name
The name combines the Irish elements commonly rendered as "Leitir", meaning a hillside or slope, with a family or clan name reflected in "Ceanainn". Letterkenny's setting on the Swilly estuary influenced its early development as a point for goods to move between sea and inland districts.
History
Letterkenny expanded from a small market settlement to a modern town over the 18th and 19th centuries. Contemporary accounts from 1824 describe a nearby port at Ballyraine, capable of taking vessels that brought in iron, salt and colonial produce and exported hides and butter. Little remains of the original port operations today beyond some warehouse sites. The town acquired formal municipal status in the early 1920s after the political changes that followed the partition of Ireland.
