Overview
Schuylkill County is a county in the eastern portion of the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The county seat is Pottsville. According to a mid-2018 estimate, the county's population was nearly 142,067. Organized in the early 19th century, the county takes its name from the Schuylkill River, a feature that helped shape its settlement and industry.
Geography and environment
Schuylkill County occupies a portion of the Appalachian region and contains rolling ridges, forested hills, and valleys carved by streams. The Schuylkill River and its tributaries drain much of the county and flow southeast toward the Delaware River. Public lands, state game areas and small parks provide outdoor recreation, hunting and hiking opportunities for residents and visitors.
History and development
The county was formed in 1811 from portions of surrounding counties and grew rapidly in the 19th century with the discovery and exploitation of anthracite coal. Mining towns and transport links expanded as collieries, railroads and canals developed. Labor struggles and community movements associated with the coal era left a lasting imprint on local culture and built heritage.
Economy, culture and notable sites
Anthracite mining dominated the economy for more than a century; after coal production declined, the area diversified into manufacturing, services, light industry and tourism. Pottsville is home to the Yuengling brewery, widely recognized as the nation's oldest operating brewery, and other historic downtowns preserve 19th-century architecture. Annual events, local museums and heritage trails interpret the county's industrial past.
Government, communities and transportation
The county government is based in Pottsville and administers regional services for townships, boroughs and unincorporated areas. Major population centers include several boroughs and towns, notable among them:
- Pottsville (county seat)
- Tamaqua
- Shenandoah
- Minersville
