History and development

The Science Museum has its roots in the mid-19th century collections formed after the Great Exhibition and the development of museums in South Kensington. Over time those collections were reorganised into specialised institutions and the Science Museum emerged as a separate centre for the history and display of science and technology. The complex includes historic fabric and later extensions to accommodate growing displays and educational facilities.

Visiting and public use

General admission to the Science Museum has been free since 1 December 2001, a policy supported by public funding. While the permanent galleries are free to enter, visitors may be asked to pay for some special or temporary exhibitions and for certain ticketed events.
