Overview

San Lorenzo (also called Villa San Lorenzo) is a small town in the southern Andean region of Bolivia, situated within the Tarija Department. It functions as the administrative seat of Eustaquio Méndez Province. The town lies on the left bank of the Río Tojtiwaysho at an elevation of about 2,001 metres (approximately 6,565 feet) above sea level and is located roughly 15 km north of the city of Tarija, the departmental capital.

Geography and population

San Lorenzo occupies a valley landscape characteristic of the Tarija region, with nearby agricultural land and riparian corridors along the river. Road connections to Tarija make it a short trip from the department capital, and the town serves surrounding rural communities for basic services and administration. As of the mid-2000s San Lorenzo had a population of just over 3,000 residents; more recent figures vary and depend on census updates.

History and notable figures

The town is historically linked with Eustaquio Méndez, commonly known by the nickname Moto Méndez. Méndez was a prominent local leader during the independence era in the early 19th century and took part in military and political actions in the region during the conflicts that led to independence from Spanish rule. San Lorenzo preserves this association as part of its civic identity.

Museums and heritage

Casa del Moto Méndez is a small local museum in San Lorenzo that exhibits personal items attributed to Eustaquio Méndez, including period clothing, documents and weapons. The museum offers a focused look at regional memory of the independence period and is a frequent point of interest for visitors studying local history.

Economy, services and local life

The town functions mainly as a municipal and service center for the surrounding rural area. The local economy typically includes agriculture, small-scale commerce and public administration. San Lorenzo's proximity to Tarija means many goods and services are accessed in the departmental capital while the town retains a quieter, community-oriented character.
