Overview

Saanich is a district municipality in the southern part of Vancouver Island and forms the northern portion of the Greater Victoria area. It lies immediately north of the City of Victoria and is home to more than 100,000 residents, making it one of the more populous municipalities on Vancouver Island. The district takes its name from the Saanich (W̱SÁNEĆ) peoples who have lived in the area for millennia.

Communities and geography

Saanich is not a single urban core but a collection of neighbourhoods and suburban centres. Notable communities include Gordon Head, Royal Oak, Cordova Bay, Tillicum and Gorge, Cadboro Bay, Broadmead, Cedar Hill and Ten-Mile Point. Many neighbourhoods combine residential areas with parks, small commercial villages and local institutions. The district includes coastal shorelines, farmland, and parkland, and acts as a transition between the urban core of Victoria and more rural areas to the north.

History and name

The name Saanich derives from the indigenous Saanich peoples of the region. European settlement and municipal organization expanded through the late 19th and early 20th centuries; the municipality marked a formal centenary in 2006, reflecting over a century of municipal services and community development. For historical and cultural context see a regional summary at Greater Victoria.

Facilities and events

Saanich contains a range of public facilities and recreation centres that serve Greater Victoria. A prominent example is Saanich Commonwealth Place, an aquatic and recreation complex that was used for swimming and competitive diving events during the 1994 1994 Commonwealth Games. The venue continues to host community programs; for facility details see references to its swimming programs at swimming and to its diving history at diving.

Government, services and notable facts

The District of Saanich is governed by a mayor and council and provides services typical of a suburban municipality, including parks, libraries, public works and development planning. Information about local government roles and elected offices can be found via municipal resources at mayoral and council information. The district also highlights centennial celebrations and community heritage initiatives; additional municipal milestones are noted in summaries of the 2006 centenary at Saanich 100th anniversary.
