Bajocian — Middle Jurassic age and stage
The Bajocian is a stage of the Middle Jurassic (about 170.3–168.3 Ma), defined by marine strata and ammonite biozones. It succeeds the Aalenian and precedes the Bathonian.
The Bajocian is an age or stage in the Middle Jurassic of the geologic timescale, lasting roughly from 170.3 to 168.3 million years ago. It follows the Aalenian and is succeeded by the Bathonian. The name derives from the Latin name for the French town of Bayeux (Bajocae), near where characteristic rocks of this interval were first studied. In international stratigraphy the Bajocian is recognized by a set of ammonite index fossils and by distinctive marine sedimentary sequences.

Bajocian rocks are widely marine in many regions and commonly include limestones, marls and argillaceous (clay-rich) deposits deposited on continental shelves and carbonate platforms. Sea levels in this part of the Middle Jurassic were relatively high, allowing extensive shallow seas to develop over parts of what are now Europe, North Africa, and other continental margins. Episodes of greater terrigenous input produced sandstones and deltaic facies in some basins.
Fossils and biostratigraphy
Ammonites are the principal index fossils used to subdivide and correlate Bajocian strata worldwide; bivalves, brachiopods, and microfossils such as foraminifera also help refine correlations. Marine vertebrates, including ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs, occur in some localities. Terrestrial deposits of Bajocian age are less common but occasionally preserve plant remains, freshwater organisms and dinosaur or crocodile remains, offering a glimpse of contemporaneous land ecosystems.
Uses, significance and correlations
Geologically, the Bajocian is important for regional correlation and for reconstructing Middle Jurassic paleogeography and sea-level history. Bajocian carbonate platforms have been quarried as building stone and can form petroleum reservoir rocks where porosity and burial history are favorable. Paleontologists rely on Bajocian ammonite zonations to correlate sequences between basins and continents.
