Roelof Nelissen — Dutch politician and banker (1931–2019)

Nelissen’s political affiliation was with the Catholic People's Party, a centrist Christian democratic party active in the postwar Netherlands that later joined the Christian Democratic Appeal. He served at ministerial level in the cabinet led by Barend Biesheuvel, a coalition government that governed from 1971 until 1973. As Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance he was responsible for fiscal policy, budgetary oversight and economic coordination during a period marked by social change and evolving international economic conditions. After leaving frontline politics Nelissen made a significant transition to banking. As CEO of AMRO Bank in the 1980s he presided over one of the Netherlands’ major commercial banks during a decade of consolidation and internationalisation in the European banking sector. AMRO later became part of the formation that is known today through subsequent mergers.

Nelissen was born in Hoofdplaat and died in Hilversum on 18 July 2019 at the age of 88.
