Overview
Robertson County is a rural county in the U.S. state of Texas. At the 2010 census the county recorded 16,622 residents. The administrative center and county seat is Franklin, which serves as a local hub for government and services in a landscape made up largely of farms, ranches and small towns.
History
The county traces its origins to the nineteenth century and takes its name from Sterling C. Robertson, an early empresario and colonist associated with Anglo settlement in Texas. Like many Texas counties, Robertson developed through agriculture, land grants and the arrival of railroads, which helped establish towns and commercial crossroads. Over time its economy and population have reflected broader regional changes in agriculture and transportation.
Geography and communities
Robertson County comprises a mix of open farmland, wooded tracts and small urban clusters. The county seat and a number of other incorporated and unincorporated communities provide centers for commerce and local life. Major towns and communities include:
- Franklin (county seat)
- Hearne
- Calvert
- Smaller communities and rural settlements
Economy and culture
The local economy remains rooted in agriculture—crops, livestock and related services—while small manufacturing, retail and service businesses support residents. Cultural life often centers on county fairs, historic sites and community events that reflect local traditions. Proximity to larger urban areas gives some residents access to broader employment and educational opportunities while preserving a largely rural character.
Government, services and notable facts
Robertson County government provides law enforcement, courts, road maintenance and other county services from the county seat. The county is notable for its nineteenth‑century origins, historic downtowns in several towns, and landscapes typical of central‑eastern Texas counties. Visitors and researchers often consult county records, local museums and regional historical societies to learn more about its settlement and development.
