Early life and college

Holmes grew up in Huntsville and attended Southern University, a historically Black institution known for producing pro-level talent. At Southern he developed the skills—power running, pass protection and short-area quickness—that made him attractive to professional teams. His college career helped launch his transition to the professional game and established him as a reliable backfield contributor.

Professional career

Holmes joined the professional scene during the era of the American Football League and later competed in the National Football League. He spent significant time with the Kansas City Chiefs, and later had stints with the Houston Oilers and the San Diego Chargers. While not primarily a headline star, he provided depth, versatility and experience to his teams, contributing on offense and special teams when called upon.
