Career and riding profile

De Greef spent his career at the continental level, racing for squads that contest UCI Europe Tour events and national competitions. He achieved his most notable victory in 2017 at the Kernen Omloop Echt-Susteren, a Dutch one-day race that often features hilly terrain and aggressive tactics. In March 2019 he rode to a high-profile podium finish, coming second in the Ronde van Drenthe, an important early-season Belgian race that draws strong regional competition. His results reflected a capacity to animate races with long moves and to contest selective sprints from reduced groups.

Collapse, medical treatment and death

De Greef suffered a sudden collapse while riding the Omloop van de Braakman in April 2019. He was taken to a hospital in Antwerp, where he was placed into an induced coma as doctors treated him for cardiac arrest and subsequent complications. More than three weeks after the incident he died of a brain haemorrhage on 25 April 2019, aged 27. The sequence of events — cardiac arrest followed by brain injury — is sadly a known risk when prolonged resuscitation and intensive care are required.

Legacy and wider significance

De Greef's death prompted reflection within the cycling community about medical screening, on-course emergency response and the risks of undiagnosed cardiac conditions in athletes. While sudden cardiac events in elite sport are uncommon, his case contributed to renewed attention on preventive measures, improved on-site resuscitation protocols and support for families of riders affected by medical emergencies. Tributes from teammates, rivals and local clubs highlighted his reputation as a determined competitor and a respected member of the regional racing scene.

Although his professional palmarès were modest compared with WorldTour stars, Robbert de Greef is remembered for his racing spirit and the impact his passing had on conversations about athlete health and safety in road cycling.
