Rio Blanco County lies in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Colorado. The county seat is Meeker and the county had a population of 6,666 at the 2010 census. Its name, Spanish for "white river," refers to the White River that flows through the region. The county is notable for low population density, a landscape of high basins and ranges, and an economy that blends energy extraction, ranching and outdoor recreation.
Geography and environment
The county encompasses valleys, mesas and portions of mountain country. Semi-arid basins sit alongside forested higher ground and riparian corridors. Rivers and creeks support agriculture and native wildlife. Public lands and state wildlife areas provide habitat and opportunities for hunting, fishing, hiking and dispersed recreation that are important to the local economy and way of life.
History and communities
Indigenous peoples, including bands of the Ute, lived in and traveled across the area before European-American settlement. Near Meeker the 1879 confrontation between Ute people and federal agents—often referred to in histories of the region—was a significant event in local history. The county developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as ranching and later energy exploration expanded. Meeker and Rangely are the county's principal towns, serving as centers for government, services and commerce.
Economy and land use
Rio Blanco's economy combines livestock ranching, small-scale agriculture, and mineral and energy production, including natural gas and oil operations. Tourism and recreation linked to fishing, hunting and scenic drives also contribute seasonally. Local government and community organizations work to balance resource development with conservation and recreation.
