Early career and work with Diego Rivera

In the late 1940s Lazo began working closely with the leading figure of Mexican muralism, Diego Rivera. She served as his assistant from 1947 until Rivera's death in 1957, participating in the planning, execution and restoration of monumental murals. This decade-long collaboration exposed her to the technical demands of large-scale fresco work and to the political and historical themes characteristic of the movement.

After that formative period Lazo continued to produce public murals and independent compositions. Her work often engaged historical subjects, cultural memory and local landscapes, and she made use of color, narrative composition and figurative representation aligned with the muralist legacy while maintaining her own artistic voice.

Rina Lazo died on November 1, 2019, in Mexico City from complications described as cardiac arrest. She left behind a body of public art and easel work that links Guatemalan origins with a long career in Mexico. Lazo is remembered for sustaining and adapting the muralist tradition across decades, for mentoring younger artists, and for contributing to the visual record of cultural and historical themes in Latin America.
