Ricardo Tito Jamin Vidal (Latin: Ricardus Vidal; 6 February 1931 – 18 October 2017) was a Filipino cardinal-priest who served as Archbishop of Cebu and as a leading figure in the Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines. Born in Mogpog, Marinduque, Vidal rose through the Church hierarchy to become one of the country’s most recognized Catholic leaders. He combined pastoral duties with administrative, national and regional roles that made him influential in both ecclesial and public life.

Ecclesiastical career and offices

Vidal’s tenure as Archbishop of Cebu spanned several decades until his resignation was accepted by Pope Benedict XVI on 15 October 2010; he was succeeded by Jose S. Palma on 13 January 2011. As a cardinal-priest he ranked among the senior prelates of the Philippine Church and participated in numerous ecclesial bodies. His responsibilities ranged from local parish oversight and diocesan administration to participation in national conferences and international episcopal gatherings.

Leadership roles and contributions

Across his career Vidal took on leadership posts that shaped clergy formation, pastoral priorities, and regional collaboration. Notable positions included:

  • President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), 1986–1987;
  • Chairman of the CBCP Episcopal Commission on the Clergy, beginning in 1989;
  • Convenor of the Standing Committee of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences for a number of years.

In these roles he worked on issues such as clergy life and formation, interdiocesan cooperation, and the Church’s social and pastoral response to changing conditions in the Philippines and across Asia.

Public presence and pastoral priorities

Vidal was widely regarded as a pastoral leader who sought to balance doctrinal fidelity with engagement in social concerns. Throughout his ministry he addressed matters that drew public attention — from education and social welfare to the Church’s voice in moral and civic debates — often speaking as a representative of the institutional Church while also emphasizing reconciliation and dialogue.

Death and legacy

Ricardo Vidal died in Cebu City on 18 October 2017 at the age of 86. Reports indicate his death followed complications from sepsis. His passing prompted reflections on a long episcopal ministry that left institutional and pastoral marks on Cebu and the Philippine Church.
