Overview
Renville County is a rural county located in the U.S. state of Minnesota. According to the 2010 census the county had 15,730 residents. The county seat is Olivia, which serves as the center for local government, services and community events. The county is characterized by small towns, agricultural land and a dispersed population typical of much of greater Minnesota.
Geography and environment
The county sits within prairie and agricultural regions of Minnesota, with a landscape of rolling fields, grasslands and scattered wetlands. Streams and minor river valleys cross the area and support local wildlife. Land use is dominated by cultivated fields and pasture; natural areas and county parks provide opportunities for outdoor recreation and habitat preservation.
History
Renville County was established in the mid-19th century and is named for Joseph Renville, a prominent Métis fur trader and interpreter who was active in the region. Before European-American settlement the territory was home to Dakota (Sioux) peoples and other Indigenous communities. Settlement and development followed patterns common to Minnesota: land surveys, railroad access, and the growth of towns tied to farming.
Economy and communities
Agriculture is the principal economic activity, with row crops and livestock forming the backbone of the local economy. Typical farm products include:
- row crops such as corn and soybeans
- dairy and livestock production
- supporting agricultural services and small manufacturing
Communities in the county are small in size; Olivia is the administrative center and hosts many of the county’s civic and cultural institutions. Residents often rely on regional centers for higher-order services and specialized employment.
Government, services and transportation
County government provides core services including courts, public health, road maintenance and land records. A network of state and county roads connects towns and farms; these routes are important for moving agricultural goods to market. Local schools, volunteer organizations and county fairs play an important role in community life.
